Interior Minister Ervin Demo announced that two State Police officers have been suspended from duty for exceeding their authority during protests in Tirana. The decision came after extremely serious footage circulated on social networks, showing police officers dragging a young protester along the ground and kicking him while he lay on the ground.
The minister stressed that he became aware of the two cases through footage published in the media and on social networks, and that he had requested their verification by the relevant structures. Demo said he had demanded that police response be proportional and within the limits of the law, stressing that every case of officers exceeding their authority would be investigated. “The law will absolutely be equal for everyone, both for those who, politically motivated, commit violence with the aim of creating chaos in Albania, and for uniformed officers who exceed the limits of the law,” the minister said.
Demo also accused the organizers of the protests of inciting acts of violence against police, institutions and private property. He emphasized that the response of law enforcement must be proportional and in line with the law. The minister appealed to parents not to allow minors to be involved in violent acts, while assuring citizens that ensuring public order and safety will continue to be a priority.
