MEP Terry Reintke expressed solidarity with Albanian citizens protesting against the government, stressing that peaceful protests do not hinder Albania’s integration into the EU. According to her, the main obstacles are corruption, failure to implement European legislation and disregard for the rule of law.
She underlined that support will continue for citizens demanding functional democracy, the protection of rights and the protection of the Albanian coast.
“It is not peaceful protests that hinder EU membership. It is governments that do not implement EU legislation, that are corrupt and that do not respect the rule of law. That is why we continue to express our solidarity with all the people who are fighting in Albania.
Not only to protect the beautiful Albanian coast, but also to have a true democracy that protects citizens’ rights, guarantees the rule of law and paves the way toward EU membership.”
