Medical doctor and academic Dr. Besnik Jakaj has expressed his support for the students’ protest and for the involvement of professors standing alongside them.
“Professors had a moral and civic duty. Today the square is the real auditorium where society, students, professors and academics take their lessons. In a democratic society, freedoms and fundamental human rights are non-negotiable”, Jakaj said, stressing that the protest is an important form of civic response and of defending rights.
Commenting on the situation during the protests, the academic rejected any form of violence and raised concerns about the way the State Police intervened. Jakaj praised the students’ commitment, describing the protest as a message about the importance of civic freedoms and rights.
“They have taught us that we must demand our freedoms and our rights. I have great respect for this generation”, the academic stated, emphasizing that institutions must be held accountable and that dialogue with students is important for finding solutions in the interest of them and of society.
