The government has approved financial compensation for public transport companies, at 50 lek for each liter of fuel consumed, to cover the costs caused by the situation in the hydrocarbon market. The decision approved at the Council of Ministers meeting on November 5 provides for a fund of 209 million lek from the state budget reserve for 2026. Companies providing urban, suburban and intercity transport services will benefit from this support.
Compensation will be paid for fuel consumed during the June–October 2026 period. According to the decision, the amount of fuel to be compensated may not exceed 110% of the average monthly consumption recorded during the March–May 2026 period for each company. To receive financial support, transport companies must submit an application to the tax administration where they are registered, accompanied by a valid transport license, identification details, their bank account number and fuel supply invoices.
Companies that also carry out other activities must submit additional documentation to verify the amount of fuel used for transporting passengers. The final deadline for submitting applications is November 16, 2026. After receiving the applications, the tax administration will verify the documentation and, within 15 working days, will forward to the treasury the list of beneficiary entities and the corresponding payment orders. Payments will be made within five working days from the treasury’s receipt of the documentation.
