The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has responded to the protests and acts of violence in Albania, calling on all parties to lower tensions and avoid further escalation of the situation. Türk condemned the acts of violence, while emphasizing that inclusive and safe dialogue is the only way forward.
“I condemn all acts of violence and call on everyone involved to lower tensions and prevent further violence. The best and only way forward is inclusive and safe dialogue”, he said.
“States must engage with protesters, especially young people, in meaningful, inclusive and constructive dialogue, and take concrete steps to address the legitimate and fundamental human rights concerns related to education, public services, housing, rising cost of living and inequality”, Türk continued.
