Eight inmates were killed on Thursday in two separate prison riots in the Cotopaxi and Pichincha provinces of Ecuador, according to the government authority responsible for prisons.
In a statement published on the platform X, the National Service for Comprehensive Care for Persons Deprived of Liberty and Adolescents (SNAI) said four inmates lost their lives in a prison in Latacunga, while four others were killed at El Inca prison in Quito.
Prisons in Ecuador have become hotbeds of violence, where deadly clashes between rival criminal gangs have caused dozens of victims in a series of massacres since 2021.
