French President Emmanuel Macron received representatives of high school students at the Élysée Palace on Monday, the students having protested for weeks against the university admissions system “Parcoursup” as well as against overcrowded classrooms and the lack of resources in schools.
After the meeting, the student representatives welcomed the president’s willingness to hear their concerns, but stressed that protests must continue until concrete decisions are made. During the conversation, Macron promised to review the “Parcoursup” system, which has sparked numerous debates over how candidates are selected for higher education.
However, this commitment does not appear to have fully convinced the students, who are demanding the complete abolition of the platform and concrete solutions to the problems they face in the education system.
A first step toward meeting their demands is expected to be announced on Monday, when the student representatives will meet with the prime minister. The students have called for the mobilization to continue, insisting that promises be accompanied by concrete measures.
