Some 150,000 supporters of the Student List gathered at Slavija Square in Belgrade at the final election rally ahead of Sunday’s parliamentary elections. The massive support for the students is seen as one of the greatest challenges to Aleksandar Vučić’s rule in the past 12 years.
The student movement was formed after the collapse of the railway station canopy in Novi Sad in 2024, which killed 16 people. The tragedy sparked months of protests against the government. The students are now running with a list of 250 candidates, including academics, actors, farmers and a well-known rapper.
According to a poll published on October 20 by New Serbian Political Thought, the Student List leads with 44.5% support, compared with 42.7% for Vučić’s Serbian Progressive Party.
Political forecasts remain in favor of the president and his political structure. The elections are expected to determine not only the strength of the student movement, but also the future of Vučić’s political dominance in Serbia.
