Minister of Justice Donika Gërvalla has called for institutional accountability and the dismissal of those responsible for possible failures in handling the case of Arlinda Zekaj, who was killed in Peja, stressing that she had sought protection from the justice system but had not received it.
During the extraordinary session of the Assembly of Kosovo, convened to discuss Zekaj’s killing and the responsibility of institutions, Gërvalla stated that there must be dismissals, but clarified that the Ministry of Justice has no constitutional competence to dismiss prosecutors or judges.
She said the victim had turned to justice institutions for protection, while expressing regret that she had not also sought help from the Government.
“Arlinda turned to justice and did not receive the protection she requested. Unfortunately, she did not turn to the Government. Perhaps, had she turned to the Government, there would have been engagement, respecting the constitutional order of our country”, Gërvalla stated.
