The Kosovo Prosecutorial Council (KPK) on Thursday decided to suspend from duty the chief prosecutor of the Basic Prosecution Office in Peja, Lumturije Vuçetaj, and the prosecutor handling the case, Arlinda Nallbani Gacaferri.
The decision comes after the State Chief Prosecutor, Zejnullah Gashi, had recommended their suspension and announced disciplinary proceedings.
The decision was approved at an extraordinary meeting of the KPK. Their suspension was voted with 7 votes in favor. The Council also set up an investigative group to examine the case.
The measures against the two prosecutors were taken following suspicions about their failure to act in relation to the case of Arlinda Zekaj, who was killed on 25 October by her brother-in-law in Vitomirica, Peja.
Three days before the killing, Arlinda had requested urgent intervention from the institutions to protect her. Kosovo media have also published an audio recording in which Zekaj asked institutions in Kosovo for help.
During the conversation she expresses concern for her own safety and that of her son. In the conversation, she expresses fear that she could be killed and warns that officials would be held responsible.
