The candidacy of Lana Nusseibeh from the United Arab Emirates for the post of Secretary-General of the United Nations offers a new beginning, an opportunity the UN community cannot let slip away, and Albania is honored to give her candidacy its full and wholehearted support.
I knew Lana personally and saw her in action during Albania’s term as an elected member of the UN Security Council, when I had the opportunity to appreciate her extraordinary knowledge of international politics, her distinctive intellectual humility and her natural gift for bridging differences between cultures and perspectives.
In the gloom that now envelops the United Nations, Lana’s candidacy is a beacon of hope and a source of positive energy, because, at a time when the organization’s ability to fulfill its mission is so deeply in question, she brings experience, intelligence and an unwavering commitment to serve humanity without any prejudice.
And finally, but not least in importance, after so many men at the helm, I cannot think of a better hope for the United Nations than a woman of such stature.
