The Spanish championship is set for a fiery weekend, with the clash between Atletico Madrid and Barcelona expected to be the centre of attention. The two leading teams in La Liga, separated by just two points in the standings, will face each other on Sunday at 21:00, in a duel that could directly affect the race for the title.
Both teams come into this match after mixed results in the Champions League. Atletico Madrid were convincingly beaten at the Metropolitano by Harry Kane’s Bayern Munich, while Barcelona responded after their defeat to Real Madrid in El Clasico, where Kylian Mbappe shone with two goals. The Catalans beat Aston Villa 3-0, with Raphinha scoring twice.
Although head-to-head statistics in the league favour Barcelona, it was Diego Simeone who triumphed in direct duels last season. Atletico eliminated the Catalans from both the King’s Cup and the Champions League, showing that they remain a very difficult opponent for the Blaugrana.
The match gains even more importance because Real Madrid, just three points behind, are in pursuit of both teams. Jose Mourinho’s side is enjoying an excellent run of form and this week will play away at Valencia, in a match where it aims to extend its positive streak.
