A statement by Kylian Mbappe about Mao Zedong has sparked a major controversy in China, putting not only the French striker but also Real Madrid and La Liga in a difficult position.
It all began after a video posted on social media in which Mbappe described Mao Zedong as a “dictator”. His comment, made on the sidelines of the Golden Boy award ceremony, has triggered numerous reactions in China, while the footballer’s social media profiles have been blocked.
Despite the controversy, the French striker has continued playing on the pitch, scoring in matches against Racing Santander and AEK Athens. However, the situation off the pitch is taking on increasingly large proportions.
According to Spanish media, La Liga has begun examining ways to protect commercial agreements linked to international broadcasting rights. The concern comes after the Chinese broadcaster CCTV decided to suspend transmissions of the Spanish league, a development that could affect the league’s economic interests.
Real Madrid has also been drawn into the matter, having issued a statement with an apologetic tone in an effort to calm Asian fans and ease the reaction to its player’s remarks.
The case has also taken on a diplomatic dimension. Chinese Ambassador to Spain Yao Jing told the EFE news agency that there had been informal communications with the leaders of La Liga and the Madrid club.
“This is not about negotiations, but an exchange of views based on mutual understanding. This unfortunate incident has touched the sensitivities of many people in China, who need time to process the situation,” the ambassador said.
Diplomatic official Xie Tianyu also stressed that the issue requires time and care, underlining the great popularity that Real Madrid enjoys in China.
