Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has sent a clear message to Vinicius Junior, stressing that the Brazilian is not guaranteed a place in the starting lineup, regardless of his name and importance to the team.
On the eve of the match against Valencia, which will be played on Saturday evening at the Mestalla, the Portuguese coach addressed the situation of the Brazilian forward. Vinicius will still not be available for the league, as he must also serve a one-match suspension, while he may be activated for the Champions League.
At the press conference, Mourinho made it clear that his priority always remains the squad and not the individual interests of the players.
“For me, the most important thing is the team. I have never wanted to harm the team to benefit one player. When Vinicius returns and is available again, I will make my assessment of how I will manage him,” Mourinho said.
The Portuguese stressed that his decisions do not depend on a single match alone, but also on the schedule and the physical condition of the players. He recalled that the last Champions League match was a suitable opportunity to activate Vinicius and to rest some players, but he underlined that the goal is for everyone to be in optimal form.
Mourinho did not hold back his praise for the Brazilian’s potential, recalling that Vinicius had caused the team’s elimination from the Champions League last season.
“Despite friendship, when the moment comes to make decisions, the team must be above every player,” the Real Madrid coach concluded.
