Wayne Rooney, Manchester United’s greatest goalscorer of all time, has labelled the current squad “selfish babies” following the shocking 4-1 defeat to Como and internal criticism from captain Bruno Fernandes. Rooney’s comments come at a time of deep crisis for the “Red Devils”, who are 13th in the Premier League and risk being dragged into the relegation zone if results do not go their way this weekend.
The club is facing internal division and has recorded its worst start to a domestic league season in decades. Manager Carrick’s position has been called seriously into question following the midweek defeat. The crisis was deepened further by captain Fernandes, who openly criticised the manager’s tactics after the match, stressing that the team should have been more “brave”.
Last week, these criticisms were joined by those of defender Lisandro Martinez, who targeted the club’s board for not investing enough in the transfer market. Rooney, a former teammate and friend of Carrick, expressed “shock” and “disbelief” at the performance against Como and pointed the finger at the players.
“When Martinez came out with the statement, I said this is an absolute nightmare because it will destroy the dressing room,” Rooney said on the podcast The United Stand. “This was the start. We’ve seen it now with Bruno and we will see it with more players, because these players don’t want to take responsibility.” He added that the players are “selfish”, do not care about their teammates, the manager, the staff or the fans, but only about themselves. “If they don’t get what they want, they behave like babies and blame everyone else but themselves.”
