The head of the Democratic Party parliamentary group, Gazment Bardhi, has reacted after the recorded tensions between protesters and opposition representatives outside the Ministry of Education, calling for the opposition to unite and to avoid clashes between political forces.
“The square is not anyone’s monopoly. It does not need a permit”, he said, stressing that any effort to create divisions within the opposition risks favoring the majority.
Bardhi rejected claims that the Democratic Party is seeking to take over the student protest, stating that its position is one of support for the demands of young people. “We are not here to take the spotlight and the voice of the students. We are in support of them”, Bardhi declared.
He also criticized several small political groups which, according to him, are shifting the focus from opposing the government toward attacks on the opposition. Asked about the impact of normative acts on the development of the latest protest, which appeared calmer compared to the one a week earlier, Bardhi said young people cannot be deterred by such measures.
“The government will do everything to frighten the protesters, but I do not believe the young people are frightened”, Bardhi said. He made it known that the PD parliamentary group is preparing to challenge the normative acts at the Constitutional Court. “We are in support of the student protest, we are not the organizers”, he concluded.
