The OSCE/ODIHR has expressed concern about the situation that has developed during protests that have continued for eight days in Tirana, where students and young people have taken to the streets to voice their dissatisfaction. Clashes between protesters and the State Police have also been recorded during the gatherings. In a public statement this Tuesday, the organization called on all parties to show restraint and avoid escalating the situation.
OSCE/ODIHR stresses that law enforcement must act in accordance with the law and must not use force unlawfully or disproportionately against citizens who are protesting. The organization also calls for any suspected case of unlawful use of force to be investigated without delay and in an independent manner. Meanwhile, according to official data, so far 271 people have been arrested in connection with the protests, including a considerable number of minors.
“Concerned by reports of violence during protests in Albania, ODIHR calls on all parties to maintain peace. Law enforcement should refrain from the unlawful or disproportionate use of force against protesters, while any case of unlawful use of force should be investigated immediately and in an independent manner”, says the OSCE/ODIHR statement.
