President Bajram Begaj is holding consultations today with representatives of political parties to set the date of the 2027 local elections, in a process that begins with most of the opposition refusing the invitation.
The first meeting started at 09:00 with the head of the Socialist Party (PS) group, Taulant Balla, while at 11:00 representatives of the Social Democratic Party, led by Tom Doshi, are due to arrive at the Presidency.
It was made known that Taulant Balla told the head of state that “PS is ready for any date except May 2.”
Meanwhile, the Democratic Party, the Freedom Party, the Mundësia Party, the Albania Belongs Movement and the Together Movement have announced that they will not attend the meeting with the head of state. We stress that this boycott is not a joint decision but a parallel stance of each side.
The Secretary General of the Freedom Party, Tedi Blushi, wrote a letter to the President, in which he says that “the country is in a severe political crisis and PL cannot take part in formal procedures for election dates.”
Begaj has convened the parliamentary parties for consultations ahead of the decree setting the date of the local elections, which are to be held in spring 2027.
According to the Electoral Code, elections must be held on a Sunday, within the period 15 April to 15 May 2027. The final deadline for announcing the date is 6 November.
So far, none of the parties has publicly proposed a specific date. May is seen as the most likely period for holding the elections, while May 2 is ruled out as it coincides with Orthodox Easter. One of the dates still under discussion is May 9, which also coincides with Europe Day.
