Donald Trump has sharply expressed his displeasure with Norway, calling it a “filthy country” during a speech on Sunday. Since returning to the White House in January 2025, Trump has not hidden his desire to win the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize.
This year, the prize was awarded to former UN human rights chief and judge Navi Pillay of South Africa. Trump has described the committee’s choice as “a shameful and disgraceful decision,” arguing that the prize should have been given to him.
At a rally in the city of Port Huron, Michigan, ahead of the important US midterm elections on November 3, Trump said he would welcome immigrants from certain countries, but not from Norway, “because I didn’t get the Nobel Prize.” He added: “So I don’t want anybody from Norway.” There was no official indication of a new American policy on Norwegian immigrants.
Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide responded to Trump’s comments on Monday, stressing that the Nobel Committee is independent. “He knows very well that the Nobel Committee is independent. We have reminded him of this, in case anyone asks – and it remains true,” he told the national broadcaster NRK. Trump was harshly criticized in 2018, during his first term, after using similarly vulgar expressions to refer to Haiti and several African countries.
