The current mayor of Pristina, Përparim Rama, has taken a step that could open a new chapter for the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK). His confirmation that he will run for its leadership confronts the party with an essential debate: how can the legacy of Ibrahim Rugova be turned into civic trust and new victories?
The mayor of Pristina enters this debate with a strong argument: he has won the leadership of the capital twice, in 2021 and 2025, under the LDK banner. These victories do not automatically guarantee success at the national level, but they are concrete evidence of his ability to earn citizens’ trust.
This is precisely where the value of his candidacy lies. A party seeking to expand needs a leader who communicates beyond its membership. Përparim Rama may be able to attract citizens who respect the LDK’s history, but who expect from it a new offer, capable people and tangible results.
His experience as an architect and urban planner, with an international career before his political engagement, gives him a distinctive profile. It can serve as a basis for a style of leadership focused on development, organization and solving everyday problems. However, he must translate this experience into a national program and a team that convinces.
The LDK needs to make Rugova’s legacy useful for Kosovo’s future. This requires institutional culture, political maturity, a Western orientation and respect for the citizen. At the same time, it requires answers on employment, education, healthcare and the emigration of young people.
Përparim Rama has the opportunity to connect these two demands: the continuity of a political tradition with openness to new people and ideas. If he builds his candidacy on this combination, he can give the LDK the energy it needs to compete more strongly.
His relationship with Lumir Abdixhiku must also be handled with maturity. It was Abdixhiku who presented Rama as the candidate for Pristina in 2021. This is a contribution that deserves recognition. But a democratic party must give figures who win citizens’ trust the opportunity to seek its leadership as well.
Përparim Rama today represents one of the strongest opportunities for the growth and strengthening of the LDK. He has a proven electoral capital in Pristina and the opportunity to expand it across Kosovo. The challenge is to turn personal trust into trust for the entire party.
If he combines the LDK’s experience with a new generation of professionals, if he presents a serious program and creates room for internal competition, his leadership could mark an important turning point. The party of Ibrahim Rugova has good reason to take this opportunity seriously. Përparim Rama has earned the political right for his candidacy to be heard and assessed with the full weight it deserves.
