The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, stated that Albanians have lost 30% of their savings as a result of the fall of the euro.
In a statement to the media, Berisha described the narco-state as a factor with a devastating impact on the country’s economy, accusing the government and the media close to it of avoiding coverage of this issue.
He said the consequences of the narco-state are directly reflected in citizens’ economy, in their savings and in the activity of businesses.
“Dear female and male citizens, I am here to speak again and again about a fierce enemy that is mercilessly eroding your economy, your pockets, your security. About a fierce enemy that is also the lifeblood of the authoritarian dictatorial regime in Albania. And this enemy is the narco-state, about which those who speak can be counted on the fingers of one hand. About which the government’s media have a moratorium never to mention it. But, on the other hand, it constitutes the power of evil against Albanians.
I have denounced it hundreds of thousands of times and will continue to denounce that the most dramatic aspects of the narco-state are precisely on the economy of Albanians, on the pockets of Albanians, on the businesses of Albanians. What the media in Albania, as a whole, hide, what politicians do not dare to pronounce, or journalists, except for a few brave and daring journalists, is in fact the factor with the blind destructive power over Albanians.
What happened to savings? Savings in euros, from 2020 to 2025, have depreciated by 236 billion lek. Albanians, who rightly considered the euro a more valuable and stable currency, deposited their money in euros in banks and suffered a considerable loss of 236 billion lek.
Imagine, hundreds of thousands of Albanians have lost about 30 percent of their savings solely due to the change in the exchange rate. I am not dwelling on other deposits, but I am concerned only with the deposits of individuals”, Berisha said.
