The opposition is expected to return to the streets on Saturday for a protest that Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha describes as national. At a press conference, he stated that the rally will take place in support of students, stressing that the DP is determined to back their cause. “The Democratic Party is calling a national protest in support of the students. Nothing separates the Democratic Party from these two principles any longer,” Berisha said.
Speaking with journalists, the DP leader also mentioned the support that, he said, the movement has received from international political figures, including American congressmen and members of the European Parliament. “Congressmen from the two largest political forces in the United States, Republicans and Democrats, distinguished members of the European Parliament and the Bundestag. Strong support has also come from the organizations of centre-right political parties,” he declared.
Berisha also addressed the police response during the protests held so far, describing it as violence against protesters. He further accused the authorities of using fear to curb the opposition movement. The opposition intends to continue its political action in Parliament as well. Berisha spoke about the stance of opposition MPs in parliamentary committees, calling on them to appear and state their position on recent events. “Let them appear wherever they can make statements to condemn the brutal violence against students,” Berisha said.
