The U.S. Embassy in Tirana has urged American citizens to exercise caution and avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place in the capital, ahead of the protest announced for Saturday.
In its statement, the embassy stresses that protests in central Tirana and near government institutions are continuing, and that some have turned into violent clashes, involving the use of incendiary devices, stone-throwing and property damage.
According to the warning, other demonstrations may take place in the coming days, both in Tirana and in other cities across the country. They may also spread to surrounding streets, bringing an increased police presence, traffic blockages, detours and closures of roads.
The embassy warns that people in the vicinity of protest areas may be exposed to tear gas, flash-bang grenades thrown horizontally, incendiary devices and rubber bullets. For this reason, its personnel have been instructed to avoid all areas where demonstrations are taking place.
The statement also notes that there may be further closures or restrictions on public services in Tirana, including public transport and government institutions.
The embassy urges American citizens to avoid protests, to remain alert to their surroundings, to follow local media and instructions from the authorities, and to always have an emergency plan or an exit route from areas where demonstrations may occur.
