The controversy surrounding Kylian Mbappé continues to cause uproar in China. Despite the apology published by the French star for his comments about former Chinese leader Mao Zedong, the reactions have not subsided. China’s state broadcaster, CCTV, has asked Real Madrid to adopt an official position, making the club’s apology a condition for resuming any discussion.
The controversy began after the publication of an excerpt from the French program The Bridge, in which Mbappé commented on a meme that showed him with the face of Mao Zedong. In his reaction, the footballer described the former Chinese leader as a “dictator,” a statement that triggered strong reactions in China.
Following the criticism, the Real Madrid forward published a statement in Chinese, French and English, acknowledging that his comment was inappropriate and expressing regret for the reaction it had caused.
“This comment was inappropriate, and today I understand that it has hurt many people in China and in the Chinese community around the world. I have deep respect for the Chinese people and their history, and I am sincerely sorry,” the footballer’s statement reads.
Nevertheless, the player’s apology does not appear to have convinced Chinese media authorities. CCTV has disputed the explanation attributed to Real Madrid, according to which Mbappé had no intention of offending anyone.
According to the state broadcaster, the footballer’s statements “have crossed the limits of freedom of expression.” La Liga broadcasts in China, as well as the transmissions of matches involving Mbappé, remain suspended.
CCTV has asked the Madrid club to take responsibility for the situation, making clear that without an apology considered satisfactory by the Chinese side, there will be no room for further negotiations.
“As long as Real Madrid does not issue a satisfactory apology, there is nothing to discuss,” is the position conveyed by the television program.
The controversy has also begun to have consequences beyond the world of football. Several Chinese companies have ended their commercial relationships with Mbappé, adding pressure on the footballer and his club.
