On the eve of the derby, Inter are facing an unexpected situation regarding Marcus Thuram. The French striker, who was expected to rest after a period of intensive play, was forced to play again because of Pio Esposito’s fever. Coach Chivu had planned a new attack with Esposito and Bonny, but Esposito’s health condition forced him to change the plans. Thus, Thuram, despite having a personalised day off after his excellent performance against Fiorentina, was called upon to play, taking the weight of the team on his shoulders.
Although his performance in the last match was not at his usual level, Thuram was once again a key figure in the move that led to the first own goal. In Lautaro’s absence, his specific weight in the team has increased considerably, not only in the goal area but also as a guide for his younger teammates. This was clear when Chivu decided to risk the ill Esposito for half an hour, replacing Bonny rather than Thuram. The Frenchman admitted that the team had suffered, but stressed the importance of the two goals scored.
With 86 more minutes on his legs before he gives way to Spence, Thuram will arrive at the derby with 473 minutes of play in total, not counting stoppage time, almost eight hours of play in nineteen days. He stressed that in the squad there are no starters or substitutes, but all are equal and can wear the Inter shirt. Meanwhile, Chivu’s objective is to recover Pio Esposito, who is not only affected by the flu, but also scored his last goal in mid-September and went through a difficult psychological period after the death of his grandfather. Inter’s hope is that the wind of fate continues to push them toward victory in the derby.
