Manchester United suffered a humiliating 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth, increasing pressure on manager Michael Carrick after his controversial decision to leave captain Bruno Fernandes out failed. The loss extended United’s winless run to eight matches in all competitions, leaving them 16th in the Premier League, just one point above the relegation zone.
Bournemouth, under Marco Rose, secured a thoroughly deserved win at Old Trafford for the third time in four seasons, with goals from Rayan, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson. Fernandes, who had previously criticised Carrick’s tactics after a 4-1 loss to Como, was left on the bench for the entire match, a move Carrick described as “purely motivated by football” but which was widely perceived as a punishment. Bournemouth fans taunted Carrick with chants of “you’ll be sacked in the morning”.
The defeat underlined United’s dramatic decline since Alex Ferguson’s retirement 13 years ago, suggesting that simply sacking another manager would not be a quick fix. Despite a strong finish to last season under Carrick’s interim spell, helped by an easier fixture schedule, the club has won only two of 12 matches this season against Ipswich and Sabah. Bournemouth, fresh from a 3-0 win over AC Milan, continued their impressive form by beating another European giant. Rayan opened the scoring in the 38th minute from Justin Kluivert’s free kick, followed by Tavernier’s goal five minutes later. Evanilson sealed the win 20 minutes from time with an excellent finish. In the final minutes, United supporters directed their anger at the Glazer family, the club’s unpopular owners, instead of Carrick, although the manager is widely expected to be the “fall guy” for this latest dismal performance.
