The legal case hanging over Manchester City continues to keep fans and English sports opinion on edge. While rivals hope for harsh sanctions against the Premier League champions, the mood in the “Citizens” camp is dominated by anticipation of a ruling that could have major consequences for the club’s future.
According to the scenarios being discussed, Manchester City risks not only a considerable financial fine, but also sporting measures that could radically change its future. Among the possibilities mentioned is relegation, while the scenario of spending two seasons in the Championship would be a severe blow to the club, both sporting and economically.
Another element that has added to the concern relates to the powers of the authorities responsible for overseeing English football. David Kogan, president of the IFR, has spoken about the power the relevant bodies may have in cases where an owner is considered not to be running the club in an appropriate, equal or fair manner.
“We have the absolute power to do this. I will not comment until we have all the answers. Only then will we decide whether to launch an investigation and how we will proceed. Acting prematurely would be a very big mistake,” Kogan said.
However, at this stage there is no final decision confirming the application of such measures against Manchester City.
