Real Madrid has formally apologised to the Chinese people over Kylian Mbappé’s remarks, seeking to ease tensions caused by the controversy involving the French star.
In an official statement, the Spanish club expressed regret for the reactions that the footballer’s words may have caused, stressing its respect for China and its citizens.
“Our club wishes to apologise to the Chinese people for any concern that may have been caused by the words of our player, Kylian Mbappé. Real Madrid has deep respect for China, its history, culture and citizens, as well as for the millions of Chinese fans who support us”, the statement said.
The controversy began after several comments by Mbappé about former Chinese leader Mao Zedong. Following strong reactions, three Chinese sponsors ended their cooperation with the footballer, while state broadcaster CCTV in Beijing suspended the broadcast of the Spanish league.
Real Madrid also stressed that it supports the public apology of the French striker, who had expressed regret for his statements. The Madrid club reaffirmed its commitment to respect, coexistence and mutual understanding between cultures, expressing its desire to strengthen friendly ties with China and its fans.
It remains to be seen whether the apology will be enough to normalise relations and restore La Liga broadcasts in the Chinese market.
