Coach Rino Gattuso’s system, based on a few simple but non-negotiable rules, is leading Lazio toward an unexpected success, surpassing every optimistic forecast. This approach, which can be compared to the simplicity of the Benedictine rule “Ora et labora”, has been adapted to the world of football as “Stay focused and work.” These essential concepts, on which Gattuso makes no compromise, have transformed the white-and-sky-blue team from a ship in the middle of a storm, due to technical uncertainties and an explosive environment, into a transatlantic liner capable of sailing calmly under any conditions. This “miracle” is making Lazio fly beyond any expectation.
Gattuso explained that early in his career as a coach, he would get angry at the players’ behavior, but later he realized the mistake was his own. He admitted that the current generation of footballers is very different from previous ones and that he had to let them act freely, then demand maximum cooperation on 2-3 key concepts. This change in approach brought significant improvements. At Formello, he made it clear to the players that he only wanted those who truly shared his project, inviting the others to find another team. He stressed that he would let them do things that Gattuso as a player would have considered sacrilege (such as using the phone during physiotherapy), but in return he demanded total commitment to a few clear rules.
The first rule is **punctuality**. Lateness in training is unacceptable, without any exception, even in unforeseen cases. Gattuso himself recounted how he climbed over the blocked gate of his house to arrive on time at Formello. Second, **professionalism**. Training sessions are sacred and must always be approached in the right psycho-physical condition. If a late night occurs, it must be reported in advance; it is better to miss a session than to disrupt training with inappropriate behavior. Third, **loyalty**. This applies both in relations with the coach and inside the dressing room. Things must be said openly, because confrontations are healthy and issues should be settled there. Fourth and last, **the importance of invisible training**, which means recovery. Recovery is just as essential as training, and overdoing work has consequences. This “Gattuso law” has brought Lazio to the top of the table, with records in points and wins after eight weeks, but for the coach, this is only the beginning of a journey toward consolidating success.
