Head of the Ophthalmology Service at QSUT, Prof. Vilma Mema, has provided details on the health condition of 28-year-old Erjon Vishkulli, who was injured in the eye by a rubber bullet during yesterday’s protest in Tirana.
She said that after a consultation with the medical team, some positive signs have been observed and his condition appears more stable.
To continue treatment, it has been decided that the young man will undergo a second procedure at a specialized clinic in Italy, where the foreign body will be removed.
“I will briefly present the situation we have observed today with the doctors of the Trauma Hospital, with Dr. Elvis Veli, head of the ORL, Ophthalmology and Maxillofacial Surgery Service, who performed yesterday’s operation, and the doctors of the “Mother Teresa” University Service at QSUT. Fortunately, today we have some positive signs; after the consultation with the broader team that was conducted, the situation has become more stable. The staff has concluded that a second procedure must be carried out, to remove the foreign body. This procedure will be performed at QSUT, but for a better and more detailed expertise and a better result for the 28-year-old, we have collaborated with a specialized clinic in Italy.
We have contacted the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, which has made itself available for the transport of the patient today, and, in cooperation with the doctor and staff there, for all developments in the future.
As for his vision, the first procedure was carried out correctly within all protocols by Trauma, and then a more specialized intervention is expected, step by step, to see what the condition of the eye will be. This will become clear in the coming days,” said the head of the Ophthalmology Service, QSUT.
