PD deputy Ina Zhupa has held a meeting with members of the Committee on Transport and Tourism (TRAN) of the European Parliament, where she presented the opposition’s positions on the political situation in Albania. The deputy asked for the support of European institutions for the creation of a transitional government without Edi Rama as prime minister, as well as for the holding of free and fair elections.
“The barbaric violence against students and the political situation in Albania must receive the attention and response of European institutions! In the meeting with MEPs, members of the Committee on Transport and Tourism (TRAN) of the European Parliament, I informed them about the current situation in the country and the extraordinary protest of Albanian students.
After 136 days of peaceful protest, which the government completely ignored, students symbolically directed stones at institutions, but the response they received from the state was barbaric police violence. Footage and testimonies of the violence, with serious physical consequences, broken legs, fractures and eye injuries, are a wake-up call for democracy and human rights in Albania.
The opposition stands with the students and their protest! This is a battle for dignity, justice and Albania’s European future. The political solution that opens the way for the country is the creation of a transitional government, without Edi Rama as prime minister, that guarantees democratic standards and creates the conditions for free and fair elections.
I asked the MEPs for support for our efforts for Albania to emerge from this political crisis and build institutions that respect European standards, fundamental rights and the will of citizens. Europe cannot remain silent in the face of violence against young people who seek a better future in their own country”,-Zhupa wrote on social networks.
