Democratic Party MP Saimir Korreshi has responded critically to statements by European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos regarding Albania and the progress of its European integration process. He focused in particular on the case of Belinda Balluku, claiming that despite accusations and suspicions of considerable damage to the state budget, she remains free. To illustrate what he described as a double standard of justice, Korreshi compared her situation to that of citizens who end up in prison for much smaller matters.
“Comrade Kos does not mention that Balluku, with 1 billion euros in damage to the state budget, with villas and apartments, remains free, while someone who builds a roof is in prison”, Korreshi declared. He also criticized the lack of attention to the situation of Erion Veliaj and claims of threats against him, as well as cases of violence against protesters.
“She does not mention the fact of what happened to Veliaj or the threats against him, about which no one from the justice system has spoken. Nor has Comrade Kos said anything about those who beat protesters with rubber batons”, the MP said.
Another issue he raised was the economic situation of citizens, which Korreshi said remains far from the reality reflected in political discussions about European integration. “She also did not speak about the fact that people here still count their bread with the economic aid they receive. She does not even go out to buy a loaf of bread a day”, he said.
Korreshi also questioned calls for political dialogue with Prime Minister Edi Rama, claiming that decision-making in the country is concentrated in the hands of the latter. “What dialogue can there be when everything here is decided according to what the commander wants? Here, even the president is like a doorman who opens and closes the door. What is Comrade Kos talking about?”, the Democratic Party MP concluded.
