On Wednesday, Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj was transferred against his will to the Fier prison, which he described as a “police kidnapping” and a “political transfer.”
The situation has triggered new clashes within the Socialist Party, placing at the center of the debate the procedures and institutional responsibility for this decision. During a meeting of the Socialist parliamentary group, according to “TCH,” PS deputy Bledi Çuçi addressed Justice Minister Toni Gogu, requesting clarification on the documentation related to the transfer of the Tirana mayor.
“Where is your transfer letter? You should have obtained it before entering. If you don’t have it, resign”, Çuçi reportedly told the minister during the discussions.
The incident has reopened debates within the majority over how Veliaj’s transfer was carried out, the conditions of isolation, and the role of the responsible institutions. According to reports, the issue is also being accompanied by tensions between various representatives within the Socialist Party.
So far there is no official confirmation that the Socialist Party has demanded the resignation of Minister Toni Gogu. Meanwhile, outside the Assembly hall, Çuçi has declined to speak to journalists.
