Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever has submitted his resignation to King Philippe, who has not yet decided whether to accept it, the royal palace announced.
Following the submission of the resignation today, Monday morning, the Royal Palace said the king is “postponing his decision” and that “tomorrow he will begin consultations with the leaders of the parties participating in the governing coalition”.
The prime minister is expected to meet with the king again on Friday.
The prime minister’s resignation came after a deadlock resulting from overnight negotiations between government partners over the budget.
The prime minister was received by King Philippe who, according to Belgian reports, cut short his holiday to return to Brussels due to the severe government crisis.
Bart De Wever resigned after five government partners failed to agree on a fiscal measures package worth 10 billion euros.
