A severe tragedy has shocked the Parma area in Italy, where a 7-month-old baby died after being poisoned by carbon monoxide. The infant could not survive her injuries, as her parents had already lost their lives to the same poisoning earlier.
The tragic incident occurred during the night between Thursday, October 29, and Friday, October 30, in an apartment in Mezzani, in the province of Parma.
According to preliminary investigations, the family is suspected of having used a wood-burning stove to heat the bedroom. Poisonous gases are suspected to have been released from the appliance, causing the fatal intoxication.
The victims are the 35-year-old father and 32-year-old mother, who are suspected of having died in their sleep. Their 7-month-old baby was found still alive and was first transported to the hyperbaric center at the Vaio hospital in Fidenza. She was then admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit at Maggiore Hospital in Parma, but died this morning.
The alarm for the incident is believed to have been raised by the couple’s 14-year-old son, after his uncle was unable to reach the parents. The uncle and other family members who were in the apartment also suffered mild carbon monoxide poisoning. They received medical assistance and then left the hospital, as their condition did not pose any particular risk.
The family, originally from Senegal, had lived in the Parma area for several years and had recently moved into the apartment on Via Bocca d’Enza, where the tragedy occurred. The incident has caused great shock, while authorities continue investigations to fully clarify the circumstances of the poisoning.
