Just one week after the student-backed opposition’s victory in Serbia’s parliamentary elections, authorities have arrested Marko Kriçaku, head of the Serbian Criminal Police. The arrest was carried out on a prosecutor’s order, while his deputy, Bosko Sekulović, is also under investigation. According to Serbian media, which cite the state-run agency Tanjug, both officials are suspected of abuse of office.
Kriçaku, considered one of the close associates of President Aleksandar Vučić, is accused of interfering in the investigation of a mafia-linked murder. Prosecutors suspect he manipulated evidence to obstruct the investigation and enable the withdrawal of charges against persons involved in the incident.
In addition to this case, he is also suspected of mistreating and intimidating peaceful protesters. One of the episodes mentioned dates to August 2025, when police officers allegedly forcibly dragged several students into the basements of a government building in Belgrade.
During that period, Kriçaku headed the Police Personal Protection Unit and is suspected of having personally led the operation. According to the allegations, he struck a female student and threatened her with rape.
His career in the security structures began after a period when he worked as a car salesman. He was later recruited into the Security Intelligence Agency (BIA), and in 2023 he took over the Personal Protection Unit. At the end of 2025 he was appointed head of the Criminal Police.
The arrest comes at a delicate moment for Serbia, following the victory of the student-backed opposition list, which won a parliamentary majority and pushed out of power the coalition led for years by Vučić. The development raises questions about the future of security structures tied to the former government.
