The Democrats’ victory in the US midterm elections has shaken Republican ranks, opening a fierce debate over the political future of Donald Trump and his administration. After losing the majority in Congress, critical voices within the Republican Party are growing, while several prominent figures appear to be considering distancing themselves from the American president.
According to The Independent, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is considering resigning from his post, in a move that could help him preserve his political position ahead of the 2028 presidential race. One of his allies has warned that remaining in the Trump administration could negatively affect his future political ambitions.
At the same time, pressure on Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is intensifying. According to CNN, the House of Representatives is expected to consider next week a resolution to begin impeachment proceedings against him. The discontent of some Republicans is linked to the role Hegseth is reportedly believed to have played in Trump’s decision to launch military intervention against Iran, without a clear strategy for ending the conflict. However, Trump has given no sign that he will abandon his associate. On the contrary, the president has said he intends to keep Hegseth in office, stating that he does not understand the reason for the criticism directed at him.
The election result has also prompted reactions from Republican senators. Ted Cruz described the defeat as a “blue tsunami,” pointing out that voters’ dissatisfaction is linked to rising prices, customs tariffs and the prolonging of the conflict with Iran. Media outlets traditionally close to the conservative camp have also begun taking a more critical stance toward the president. The New York Post called on Trump to reflect on his responsibility for the result, while The Wall Street Journal described him as the main figure behind the Republican defeat.
Against the backdrop of these developments, attention is also shifting to the 2028 presidential elections. According to Fox News, Vice President JD Vance is trying to build relationships with Republicans who are dissatisfied with Trump’s leadership, creating room for a new political positioning. For his part, Trump has indicated that he is willing to cooperate with the Democrats, despite the political clash after the elections. He has stated that an agreement between the two camps would be in the interest of the country.
Developments in Washington are also being closely followed in Kyiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed hope that the shift in political balances in Congress will bring greater American support for Ukraine. The electoral defeat thus appears to have opened a new chapter of uncertainty for Republicans, where, in addition to the battle for control of Congress, an internal race for influence and leadership of the party is also taking shape on the eve of 2028.
