Former President Ilir Meta has shared a post expressing sorrow over the passing of former MP Bashkim Zeneli. He praises his acquaintance with him and their work together during important political periods and in the challenge over the Kosovo issue. The leader of the Freedom Party lists Zeneli’s contribution as ambassador to Germany, the consolidation of Albania’s foreign policy oriented toward NATO and the EU, and the value his work has left behind for young diplomats. The former president extends his condolences to the family while describing Zeneli as a ‘pilot’ capable of navigating both calm and turbulent waters.
Full statement:
It is with deep sorrow that I learned of the untimely passing of the distinguished Albanian figure in diplomacy, politics, journalism and publicistics, Bashkim Zeneli.
It was a special pleasure to know him closely and to cooperate with him during very important periods of democratic transformation, the reform of the Socialist Party where he played a leading role, but also the great challenges for the national cause, particularly Kosovo.
Bashkim Zeneli represented the worthy model of a wise and far-sighted politician, of reforms and Albania’s clear Euro-Atlantic orientation, but also a diplomat who knew how to give priority to the comprehensive strengthening of cooperation with neighbours.
A politician dedicated to the national cause and especially a tireless supporter of Kosovo’s liberation movement.
His dedicated service as ambassador to Germany during the Kosovo crisis will remain special and extraordinary in serving this great national cause.
This is a great loss, not only for the dear and wonderful Zeneli family, beside whom I find myself in these very difficult moments, but for all friends, those who knew him closely and worked with him.
My most heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Ëngjëllushe (Lushi), his daughters Valbona and Rudina, as well as to all his relatives and collaborators, not only on Albanian soil but everywhere in Europe and the world.
His contribution to building and consolidating a long-term foreign policy for Albania, clearly oriented toward NATO and European Union membership, as well as to the continuous strengthening of good neighbourly relations, will always remain a valuable legacy for all young Albanian diplomats.
Bashkim Zeneli always knew how to swim excellently, not only in calm and clear waters but also in turbulent and stormy ones, thanks to his exceptionally special abilities, sharp mind and far-sightedness!
Rest in the peace you have earned! Eternal is the memory of Him!
