Thibaut Courtois’ relationship with the Belgian national team appears to be going through a delicate phase. After the 2026 World Cup, the Real Madrid goalkeeper was reportedly leaning towards leaving the national team, but later changed his stance and expressed readiness to return. However, his absence from recent squads has raised new questions.
In an interview with DAZN, Courtois revealed a detail that drew attention, confirming that he is no longer part of the players’ WhatsApp group.
“I have been removed from the players’ group. It is used to communicate information, for example about training sessions. Every now and then there are other messages, but not many,” the Belgian goalkeeper said.
Nevertheless, 115 caps for the national team and participation in four World Cups have not led Courtois to seek privileges. He stressed that he does not expect a guarantee of a place in the starting line-up.
“Nobody has to guarantee me my place. I have never gone to the national team thinking I would automatically play. I know myself and my qualities, but if the coach prefers other goalkeepers, there is no problem,” he said.
Under Mark van Bommel, Belgium has begun to rely more on young players. Despite his personal situation, Courtois praised the coach’s work and the team’s outlook.
“The team is heading in the right direction, just like the coach. This national team has a great future,” concluded the Real Madrid goalkeeper.
