Milan and Inter are aiming to have a new stadium by 2032, a key date as Italy will co-host the European Championship with Turkey. Milan, of course, aspires to be part of the host cities. The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has sent UEFA the dossier with 13 cities and 14 proposed stadiums. UEFA will announce in 2027 which stadiums it considers suitable, after which the five Italian host cities for the matches will be chosen.
The road toward this goal has begun. Last summer, the turnstiles were removed and the Biletaria Jugore was demolished. A major operation is moving the Patroclo tunnel, which is no simple task. The construction site for the new San Siro stadium is expected to open, according to plans, at the end of this season, in the second half of 2027. Works will take place in the area of the current car parks, with logical restrictions on the number of cars allowed in the area on match days, a practice already started this season. Milan and Inter will continue to play at the current stadium, meaning that for several years two stadiums will coexist: one in operation, the other under construction.
A reasonable hypothesis foresees the new facility being inaugurated in 2031, possibly with testing in the spring. This implies almost four years of work. Meazza will be dismantled and then largely demolished, at a reasonable pace, possibly within the first 12 months after the new stadium is completed. The south-east corner of the current stadium, with part of the orange stand and part of the Curva Sud, will remain standing. This section will be reused for commercial activities, a museum, or perhaps something else, serving as a reminder of what it once was.
