Real Madrid was involved in a controversial refereeing incident in its La Liga match against Racing Santander. At the center of the controversy was Kylian Mbappé, who won a penalty after minimal contact with opposing midfielder Lucas Prati.
The incident occurred in the 10th minute of the match at the “El Sardinero” stadium. The French striker broke into the penalty area while Prati placed his arm on the upper part of his body. The contact was light, but Mbappé went down, prompting referee Jose Luis Munuera Montero to immediately point to the penalty spot.
The decision sparked protests from home players and fans, but after a VAR review, the penalty was confirmed. Real Madrid thus received a golden opportunity to take the lead in the early minutes of the match.
The incident was also commented on by Iturralde Gonzalez, a former La Liga referee and refereeing analyst for AS and Cadena SER.
According to him, the decision to award the spot kick was wrong and the contact did not constitute a sufficient foul for a penalty.
“Nothing! It’s not a penalty,” the former Spanish referee declared.
