Veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has joined Bayern Munich’s long list of injured players after suffering an injury to his right leg during the 2-1 win over Mainz on Saturday. The club announced on Sunday that Neuer will be “out of action for an indefinite period” due to a tendon rupture in his leg. German media reported that he is expected to miss at least two months.
Neuer, who played his 550th Bundesliga match, became the oldest player in Bayern’s history to appear in a league match, at the age of 40 years and 225 days. The German champions are already facing numerous absences, including coach Vincent Kompany, who is recovering from an illness, as well as players Jamal Musiala, Luis Diaz, Ismael Saibari and Serge Gnabry, who are also out for an extended period.
Despite Neuer’s absence, Bayern has good cover in goal, with No. 2 Jonas Urbig, one of three goalkeepers called up to Germany’s squad by Julian Nagelsmann on Thursday. Neuer, a two-time Champions League winner, has already missed five matches this season due to injury and has indicated that this could be his last season.
