The report that circulated on several Albanian portals, claiming that around 300 young people had allegedly ended up in the emergency department of QSUT after consuming a narcotic substance, allegedly slipped into drinks during Halloween celebrations in Tirana, is false.
The head of Toxicology at QSUT, Andrin Tahiri, who has rejected these claims, clarified that there was no such influx of patients and no confirmed cases of the use of so-called “date rape drugs”.
According to Tahiri, on the day of the celebrations some young people did come in due to alcohol abuse, but the situation was nowhere near the proportions reported. He stressed that genuine toxicological assistance was requested for only one case, and described the report about 300 young people as entirely false.
”Following the latest report about a influx of young people at QSUT emergency seeking toxicological assistance, the news is false. So the report of 300 new young people is ”fake”.
The report concerns alcohol abuse and rape drugs. There was a holiday day when the influx increases, but not to those proportions, and not with rape drugs. It is a new drug that causes complete amnesia for the person using or abusing it, it is not resisted and is called a date rape drug. We have not had such cases.
Ironically, I can tell you that on that day genuine toxicological assistance was requested for only 1 case”, said Dr. Andrin Tahiri.
