Well-known lawyer Saimir Vishaj passed away today at the age of 60, after several days hospitalized at the Trauma Hospital, where he was receiving medical treatment for severe injuries he had sustained from a fall. The news of his death brings renewed attention to the nearly three-decade-long career of one of Albania’s best-known figures in criminal law.
A graduate of the Faculty of Law at the University of Tirana in 1996, Vishaj began practising as a lawyer in 1998. Over the years, he was involved in a number of significant court cases, becoming a well-known name in courtrooms and in public debates on the justice system.
Since 2009, he had led the Albanian Association of Criminal Lawyers. Alongside his work as a lawyer, Vishaj had also taught at private universities and at the National School of Advocacy. He was also engaged in working groups on amendments to the Code of Criminal Procedure. Beyond his professional career, Vishaj was also present in public life, frequently commenting on developments in justice and the problems of the judicial system.
In October 2025, he had made public his candidacy for the post of People’s Advocate, launching the process of collecting signatures to support his bid. Beyond his profession, one of the most difficult moments of his life was his battle with a serious illness during 2025.
In an interview with Top Channel in August of that year, Vishaj had said that he had fallen into a coma and been intubated. After specialised treatment in Italy, he managed to recover and return to his professional activity. A return that he himself had described as one of the most difficult confrontations of his life. Today, at the age of 60, Saimir Vishaj closes his journey, leaving behind a long career in criminal law and a well-known name in Albanian public life.
