The midterm elections in the United States are bringing more than a change in the political map. They are also marking a series of historic milestones, with names that are expected to break old barriers in American institutions. According to CNN projections, the election results could bring unprecedented representation to the Senate, Congress and the offices of governors in several states.
One of the most important developments comes from Michigan, where Democrat Abdul El-Sayed is expected to become the first Muslim senator in U.S. history, after defeating Republican Mike Rogers. Congress is also expected to have a more diverse makeup. Melat Kiros is expected to become the first African American congresswoman from Colorado, while Adam Hamawy will be the first Muslim member of Congress from New Jersey.
Another historic record comes from New Hampshire. Democrat Chris Pappas is expected to become the first openly gay senator and win a seat in the U.S. Senate. Meanwhile, in Texas, Gina Hinojosa is expected to write history as the state’s first Hispanic governor, ending a nearly 12-year period of Greg Abbott’s governance.
The list of historic moments continues in other states. In South Carolina, Annie Andrews is expected to become the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate from this state, while in Ohio, Amy Acton aims to become the first woman to hold the governor’s office. In Georgia, Keisha Lance Bottoms is expected to become the state’s first African American governor in history, while in Florida, Byron Donalds is expected to mark another historic moment as the first African American governor.
The representation of Indigenous and LGBTQ+ communities is also expected to mark new steps. New York is expected to elect its first Indigenous American congresswoman, Claire Valdez, while in Michigan, Jeremy Moss is expected to become the first openly gay congressman from the state. In California, Xavier Becerra is expected to enter history as the first Latino governor elected in this state
