Spain’s Transport Minister, Óscar Puente, has resigned from his post, six days after a tragic railway accident in which at least 69 people lost their lives and dozens more were injured.
He announced the decision during an appearance before the Spanish Congress, where he had been summoned to provide explanations regarding the circumstances of the collision of trains that occurred last Wednesday near the town of Urda, south of Madrid.
“A Transport Minister in a country like Spain cannot remain in office after two accidents of this magnitude within less than a year”, Puente stated, also referring to another fatal accident that took place in January in the region of Andalusia, in the south of the country.
