Algorithms are increasingly replacing the front page of the media, influencing the information that reaches the public. For independent and non-profit media, the challenge is to adapt to this reality without turning into influencers or entertainment pages. Of course we must also follow the audience, but without changing our identity and editorial principles.
Today newsrooms increasingly control the content they produce, but not the algorithms that influence its distribution. Although every citizen can now report in real time, society still needs journalists who verify facts and carry out investigative journalism.
These were some of the views I shared as a panelist at the European Union Regional Conference on Media in the Western Balkans, held at 🇪🇺 Europe House, Belgrade, moderated by colleague Marina Zec, with the participation of colleagues Filip Stojanovski from “Metamorphosis” and Marko Miletič from “Mašina”.
It was a pleasure to share Amfora’s experience in practicing independent journalism, innovation and digital adaptation, developed also through the #SustainMedia program, implemented by GIZ Albania and co-financed by the European Union and the Federal Government of Germany-German Embassy Tirana.
I also shared the experience of the “Resilience Observatory”, an initiative of the Amfora Center for monitoring disinformation and foreign interference in the information environment, developed through the commitments and support of the European Union in Albania, the Embassy of the Netherlands in Albania and the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Tirana.
