PD deputy Agron Gjekmarkaj says that protests by students and academics have put Prime Minister Edi Rama’s government in a difficult position. According to him, the reaction of the academic community is a strong signal of dissatisfaction with governance. The deputy criticizes the implementation of the University Pact, claiming that the government has not fulfilled its commitments to students. According to him, the promises made have not been accompanied by concrete improvements, while students’ grievances remain unresolved.
Gjekmarkaj stated that the main demand of students is Rama’s resignation and that, in his view, dialogue with the government cannot produce solutions as long as the issues raised do not receive concrete responses. He also raised concerns about the concentration of power and the functioning of institutions, arguing that the lack of representation and the restriction of the opportunity to vote freely push society toward protests as a form of response.
”Students and academics are the elite of a country, and this elite has spoken out massively. They have signed a petition demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama. The prime minister talks about a Pact for the University, but it has been a scrap of paper. Nothing for students, only arrogance and lies. That is why students have only one demand, which is resignation. Nothing else will resolve his many concerns. It is pointless to talk with a government, a majority that has usurped 78% of power in Albania. He will have every institution. These people, when they are not represented, are abused and denied the free vote, and if this relationship has been destroyed, then what remains for a society”, he said on ”News 24”.
