The OSCE Ambassador to Albania, Michel Tarran, has commented on the violent protests held in Tirana and other cities across the country over the past two weeks.
He stressed the importance of dialogue and of involving citizens in public debates, noting that democracy is not limited only to participation in elections.
“What I have seen over these past weeks, or the past months, is a lack of dialogue. A situation where people have the impression that their voice is not being heard and that their opinion is not taken into account.
Every time there is an opportunity to organize dialogue and consultations, it should be supported. That is why I came today.
There are various channels of dialogue. It is important that citizens, especially young people, understand that they have the opportunity to take part in the public debate.
Democracy does not mean only going to vote and taking part in elections once every four years. Democracy is a daily task and an opportunity open to everyone who wishes to take part in public life and in decision-making, where their opinion and that of other citizens matters.
Violence is never a solution”, Tarran said.
