Cristiano Ronaldo has sent an emotional message through social media, announcing the end of a chapter of more than 20 years with the Portugal national team. The world football star has decided to bid farewell to the jersey he wore with pride for 23 years, describing this journey as one of the most important experiences of his life.
In the published letter, Ronaldo emphasized that the time has come to pass the number 7 jersey to the next generation.
“The time has come to hand over the number 7 shirt. It was never just mine, but for 23 years I have had the privilege and responsibility to protect it and carry it with me on the pitch and around the world. Today the time has come to pass it on to the next generation,” the Portuguese wrote.
Recalling the journey that began in 2003, CR7 stressed that his experience with the national team has not been merely a story of matches, goals, records and trophies.
“When I look back, I don’t only see the matches, goals, records and trophies. I see the people, the Portuguese living abroad who, for 90 minutes, feel a little closer to home. I see millions of fans I have never met in person, but who have become part of my life. Because, at the end of the day, football is more than a sport,” Ronaldo says.
A message that marks the end of an era for Portuguese football, as Ronaldo has been for more than two decades the symbol and leader of the Lusitanian national team.
